The Experimental Hall Class 1 controlled area, which has the potential to be contaminated by radioactive substances, is divided between the standard "Class 1 B" area and the reduced surface contamination "Class 1 C" area, as shown in the table below.

Table:Experimental Hall Controlled area divisions

Divisions Standard Class 1 controlled area (Class 1 B) Reduced surface contamination area (Class 1 C)
Explanations Surface contamination is assumed Activities that may result in surface contamination cannot be undertaken.
Clothing, etc.
Yellow clothes
Specialized shoes (yellow)
Specialized shoes (yellow)
Primary locations BL11, Experimental preparation laboratory 3 Experimental Hall, corridor, Experimental preparation laboratory 1, 2, etc.
Notes Helmets specialized for the experimental area are to be used.

The Class 1 B area is assumed to contain surface contamination, thus yellow clothes and specialized yellow shoes are to be worn in this area. The primary locations are beamline 11 and Experimental preparation laboratory 3. Activities that carry a risk of surface contamination cannot be conducted in the Class 1 C area, and specialized white shoes are to be worn in this area. Yellow clothing is not required. Primary locations include the Experimental Hall, Experimental preparation laboratory 1, 2, etc.

Please store additional baggage in the locker room on the 2nd floor of MLF, or in the user room lockers on the 3rd floor of the J-PARC research building, prior to experiments.

At departure, all researchers are required to confirm that no radioactive substances are present on their hands and feet (contamination inspection), and following that to take out all the materials and equipment brought in. There are two item export monitors provided for material contamination inspection in the contamination inspection room. One monitor is capable of detecting contamination in goods up to 300 mm x 350 mm x 145 mm in size, the other is capable of detecting contamination in goods up to 440 mm x 400 mm x 400 mm in size. Any goods larger than this that need to be taken out of the facility will need to be inspected by the J-PARC staff, this can only be conducted during office hours.
